Corporal William West, 17th Regiment

I was on Picquet with Lt. Ross on the night of the attack of Stony Point. On relieving the Sentries at nine o'clock, those that came off informed me that they had heard a noise in front like the clashing of arms. I . . . could hear nothing. . .[at] eleven o'clock, Corporal Cummings relieved the Sentries. On his return. . . he reported to Lt. Ross that. . all was very quiet. But about an hour after the two Advanced Sentries fired, I, pulling out my watch found that it to be just twelve o'clock."

Corporal West and his men see the enemy destroying the abatis at fleche #3, and retreat to the battery commanded by Lt. Horndon where they are captured.
