Vulture

The HMS Vulture, Sloop of War, commanded by Captain Sutherland, was a large ship approximately 75 to 100 feet long, with a full complement of guns. It was intended to guard the north flank of Stony Point, but on the night of the battle it was anchored in the middle of the Hudson, just off the tip of the peninsula, probably because the high winds would have blown it onto the rocks at its assigned location. The Vulture was fired upon by the Americans after they captured the fort, but it sailed out of range and was undamaged.
