Upper Works
To the east, towards the Hudson River, was the
second set of defenses - the Upper or Inner Works - another abatis, seven artillery pieces, and five companies of
infantry. In broad daylight, the British were very well protected
- but the Americans chose to attack at midnight, July, 15, 1779.
