The Central Upper Works & Right Flank Battery
This is the central area of the Upper Works where
the 168 British defenders deployed here were overwhelmed by the
advancing American assault columns numbering 1,150 men. Lt. Colonel Henry Johnson was captured here after returning from the Outer
Works where he thought the main enemy attack was directed. Shown
on the right, where a circular stone platform was erected later,
is the location of the right flank battery with 18 and 24 pounder
cannons. Like similar weapons on the left flank, these weapons
were not fired, although their embrasures allowed soldiers from
the American north column, commanded by Colonel Richard Butler, to enter the Upper Works.
