Lieutenant William Marshall, 63rd Regiment, acting Engineer
"I was appointed Acting Engineer at Stony Point on the
26th of June, 1779, and went thither by orders of Captain Mercer,
the Commanding Engineer, who was then at Verplanck's Point. On my
arrival there, I waited on Lt. Col. Johnson . . .I went round
with Lt. Col. Johnson and pointed out some things that I thought
necessary to be done for the better security of the post."
Marshall suggested that the north side of the powder
magazine be coated with sod, that the outward abatis be
secured, and that both abatis be strengthened. He was captured by
the rebel blockhouse.
