Howitzer Battery
Near this spot was the howitzer battery, intended to
guard the shallow area of Haverstraw Bay by the shore. This gun,
which might have been a powerful deterrent to the American south
column as it waded through the water and ascended the slopes into
the Upper
Works, was overrun and
captured before it could fire a single shot. The area near the
shore, known as 'the angle," was crossed by the main assault
column, commanded by General Anthony Wayne.
