Sergeant Henry Gillott, 17th Regiment

"I was posted at Fleche No. 2 in the Lower Abbatis under the command of Lt. Carey. . ..The orders I heard Lt. Col. Johnson give to Lt. Carey were firstthat the men were to be very sparing with their ammunition, and, secondly, not fire unless their was an object in sight, by the Enemy approaching.near the works, as from the darkness of the night we could not see them unless we did so. After the attack had continued for some time, Lt. Col. Johnson gave an order to Lt. Carey to withdraw the men from that work and to march them very slowly and silently to the Upper Works."
