Fleche 2
The focus of defensive
activity was near this location, as a result of the fake attack
launched by Major Hardy Murfree, whose men fired shots to draw
the British toward them and away from the American attack columns
on the north and south. Two small mortars were deployed, but
neither was fired, probably because the gunners could not see in
the darkness and might have killed or injured their own sentries
beyond the abatis.
