Fleche 1

After cutting down most of the trees to make a field of fire for the artillery, the British created defensive positions including fleche #1. This artillery position was on the left or south flank of the British Outer Work, near the shallow area of Haverstraw Bay. The 12 pounder cannon here fired 27 rounds but none proved effective because the gun was confined in an embrasure and could not be turned against the American south column, wading through the water.
