"There were six different Picquets posted along the
creek, including a corporal and nine men detached from one of
them across the creek upon the left, that I imagined were
stationed there to give the alarm in case of the enemy
approaching and to retire, in consequence of which I gave those
orders. .the six picquets consist[ed] of 1 subaltern, 5
sergeants, 1 drummer, and 81 rank and file [and] there were 19
sentries during the night of the attack, forming a chain from
right to left."
