"After a few shots being fired in front I met Lt. Col. Johnson and walked with him as far as the howitzer battery. . . My company with 2 others from the 17th regiment were posted from the entrance of the upper work to the point on the rock near Haverstraw Bay. These 3 companies together consisted of 38 men exclusive of non-commissioned officers."
