Advanced Work #1

One short brass 12 pounder, commanded by Lt. William Horndon and four artillerymen.
In addition, there were 1 subaltern, 1 corporal, and 16 privates.

This gun fired 25 rounds during the battle, but it could not be turned against the American south column on the left because it was confined by an embrasure.

This work and the others along the outer abatis were fleches, from the French for arrow., simple earthen fortifications open at the back, and here at Stony Point, modified for artillery with embrasures. The sides of the fleches were 12 feet at the base, tapering to 8 feet at the top.
