International E-Mail Project: Our Day Today-Mar. 12, 1997
Our Day Today is the title of an e-mail project that Eileen Corn, the technology
resource teacher from the William O. Schaefer School, found posted on one
of the listservs she belongs to.
It was posted by educator Phil Redman, of London, England. His idea was
to have an international project where one representative from various schools
around the world would describe the events of one particular day. That
day was March 12, 1997.
Mrs. Kathryn Cuccia and her 2nd grade class represented the South Orangetown
Central School District. W.O.S. was one of the seventy-one schools that
participated.
Mrs. Cuccia, on March 12th, listed Mr. Redman's survey questions on chart
paper and the class suggested the best ways to fill in the answers. The
survey questions included questions about what the school day was like,
the weather, and the community. The children also donated samples of the
types of classroom activities that they engaged in that day, to share with
the other schools, as well as some computer camera photos of the students
collecting the necessary data. Mrs. Corn, Mrs. Cuccia, and the students
were thrilled to have been chosen to be involved in an international project.
They are looking forward to seeing the results from the other seventy schools
and comparing our data to theirs.
It is projects like these that enable children to work with and learn from
other students in a very meaningful way. A truly great way for students
to gain an understanding of the world around them!
