The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns is located 25 miles north of New York City and serves students from the communities of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. The school district encompasses students from the communities of the villages of Sleepy Hollow and about 90 percent of Tarrytown. The villages are basically residential communities. The nearby educational and cultural resources of New York City are supplemented by many county groups active in the performing and creative arts. Civic activity and community responsibility are hallmarks of both communities, which represent a true cross-section of American life and have a combined population of 19,000.
This innovative district has committed itself to provide the finest education available to its diverse student body. Each school has an active Building Committee where teachers, parents, administrators, community members and students (where appropriate) work to improve the educational experience for students. The district has committed itself to bring the latest technology into each classroom to facilitate student learning as well as to prepare the youngsters to use that technology themselves.
The district conducts a screening program for students entering the district and continues to monitor their achievement. The elementary schools utilize the latest math, language arts and science programs designed to challenge all students. The middle school offers a team-based approach to help students grow from the elementary school environment to the more rigorous demands of their final years in the district. Sleepy Hollow High School offers a wide variety of courses to meet the needs of the student body. Four foreign languages (French, Spanish, Italian, and German) and more than a dozen advanced placement courses are notable. New science laboratories and a state-of-the-art high tech SMART LAB are new renovations in Sleepy Hollow. In addition, a rich offering of sports and extra-curricular activities is available for students.
The district also offers a full range of art and music instruction, and through its participation in programs offered by SUNY Purchase and BOCES Southern Westchester allows for further development in these areas. It also provides a broad range of occupation-related education through its participation as a component district in BOCES Southern Westchester. Our students attend the finest colleges in the country.
