Principal's Message
by Mrs. Carol L. Conklin

Welcome to Sleepy Hollow Middle and High School. We are very pleased that you have chosen to visit us and hope that you enjoy reviewing information about our school and community. We encourage you to respond to what you see and read, by leaving messages in the appropriate places. Both students and staff find this feedback rewarding and informative.

Sleepy Hollow is a truly unique and special place. This year almost 900 students in grades 7 through 12 attend our middle and high school program. We are housed in a beautiful building on a sprawling campus which overlooks the scenic Hudson River. Our youngest students participate in a comprehensive middle school program which provides integrated learning opportunities in mathematics, science, social studies, and English language arts. Students also receive instruction in an exploratory core of subjects including art, music, home and careers, technology, health and physical education. The high school program offers more than 160 courses, designed to meet the diverse needs of our student body. In addition to sixteen advanced placement courses and eighteen honors courses, acceleration and independent study projects for advanced students are provided as well as remediation, special education and English as a second language for students with limited English proficiency.

Ours is a school community where diversity really works. We have students from every social-economic background representing a wide variety of cultures. Here, diversity is valued and celebrated as one of our greatest strengths. As principal, I am frequently the recipient of many compliments from those who visit us and say that our student body is among the nicest and most sincere group of adolescents to be found anywhere.

We offer many special programs to enhance student learning. We are pleased with our affliations with the business community. Hitachi, IBM, Bayer and local merchants enjoy taking an active role in educating our community's youth. Annually, we develop new courses of study and seek ways to enhance what we already do well. For example, this year we have instituted two new AP courses, Environmental Science and Spanish Literature. Our technology program now centers around a brand new SMART LAB which provides a multi-media, discovery-based learning environment for students to explore technology in a problem solving mode.

Sleepy Hollow provides a full range of athletic and extra curricular programs. Additionally, we participate in student exchange programs with Germany and Spain. Along with yearbook, chess club, and VAASA, we participate in the model United Nations Conference, the Princeton Model Congress, the IBM teaching program, the Washington Workshops Congressional Seminar, and Mock Trial competition. Our award winning literary magazine, Shadow and Substance, and student government developed TAPS program (Teens Against Prejudice in Society) are widely acknowledged for their excellence. We offer a full range of boys and girls inter-scholastic sports at the J.V. and varsity levels. We are very proud of our multiple scholar-athletic teams and our high performing athletes.

Another tremendous source of pride is our music and performing arts programs. Our band, jazz band, chorus, select chorus, and orchestra continue to excel at festival competitions and in NYSMA. This fall, our high school program was named a Grammy Signature School, one of 250 in the nation.

Each year Sleepy Hollow students are awarded an excess of $200,000 in scholarships. We are grateful to our private and corporate benefactors and thank them for their continued support of our students. We enjoy getting to know our students over the course of their six years with us. We revel in watching them grow and develop through adolescence to becoming fine young men and women we can be proud of. Our school size is just large enough to enable us to provide a wide variety of specialized programs while being small enough to allow us to personalize education for each of our students. Our staff is a highly talented and dedicated group of professionals who enjoy the work they do. Ongoing professional growth and staff development enables us to be the best we can be for our students.

On behalf of our assistant principals, Mr. Joseph Carmody and Mr. Alan Alterbaum, our staff, faculty, and students, I invite you to visit us often, either online or in person. We appreciate your interest in our school.
