Shania Twain

Shania Twain was born on August 28, 1965 in Windsor Ontario. Her birth name was Eilleen Regina Edwards and later she adopted her first name Shania, which means "I'm on my way" in the Ojibwa Indian language. She lived in Canada and her stepfather Jerry worked odd jobs to keep food on the table for the whole family. Her mom Sharon was a housewife. Her parents pushed her to start performing when she was 8. Since she was too young to play in bars and clubs while liquor was being served they waited until the clubs were ready to close for her to sing. Shania was out on her own and making a name for herself when her parents were killed in a car accident in 1987. She did what she thought was most important and went back home to take care of her sister and two brothers. When her brothers and sister where older she went back to singing. In 1988 she moved the family to Huntsville, Ontario and started singing at the Deerhurst Resort dinner theatre. When 1990 came she was on her own. She changed her name to Shania in 1991 and shortly after that she signed a recording contract with Mercury Nashville. She sang some big hit songs like: "You’re the one" and "I feel like a woman." Shania says, "I pretty much missed my childhood and I've always been focused." She won a Grammy for Best Country Album in 1996 for "The Woman in Me." She won an American Music Award for The Best Female Country Artist in 1996.
