Harriet Tubman
Harriet
Ross Tubman's real name was Araminta, but when she got older, she changed her name to her
mother's name. She lived from 1820 to 1913. She was born on a plantation in Dorchester
County, Maryland.
She is famous because she led over 300 slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. She made 19 trips back and fourth. She was a ''conductor'' for 10 years. She never took the same path twice.
When she was 13 years old, her master hit her on the head with a 2-pound weight and it fractured her skull. The accident caused her to have uncontrolled sleepiness, and blackouts for the rest of her life.
When Harriet was older, she met John Tubman, a free man. Her mother forced her to marry him. When Harriet was old, she opened a home for old black Americans, and that was where she died.
