Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth was born in 1797 in Hurly, New York. Her parents James & Elizabeth were slaves of a wealthy man from Holland who lived in upstate New York. Sojourner had many different masters as a young child. When she was a teen she was sold to a man named John J. Dumont. Mr. Dumont made Sojourner marry another slave named Thomas. Together they had five children.

She was a very tall women with a commanding voice. She spoke for women rights and the abolition of slavery. She believed that women can do any job as well as any man.

In 1843 Sojourner said that God told her to change her name from Isabella to Sojourner Truth. During the Civil War, Sojourner went to Washington D.C serving in the Union army. Sojourner died on November 26, 1883.
