Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Thatcher is the first woman to be Prime Minister
of Great Britain. She was born Margaret Roberts on October 13, 1925 Grantham,
Lincolnshire, England. She was the daughter of grocer and a dressmaker. Her
father was involved in local politics. Early in her life she decided to be a
member of the Parliament.
She went to Somerville College. Mrs. Thatcher got her degree from Oxford in 1950 and worked there as a research chemist. In 1950 she married Denis Thatcher. In 1959 she won a seat in Parliament. From 1970 to 1974 she served as the Minister of Education and Science. In 1972 she was put in the Sun's newspaper for the most unpopular woman in Britain, but she continued to rise the ranks and succeed as the leader of her party in 1975.
In 1979 general elections Mrs. Thatcher became the first woman to be elected Prime Minister of Great Britain. She is the first Prime Minister in the 20th century to serve three terms in a row. She served until November 1990 when she resigned. Then in December 1990, she was awarded an Order of Merit award by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On June 30, 1992 she became Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven. She has written several books including one about her memories of her time as Prime Minister.
