Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was born on August 27, 1910, Skopge, Yugoslavia (now it is Macedonia.) Her name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Her father owned a small farm. She was the youngest of three children. She knew when she was 12 that she wanted to help poor people. At the age of 18 she entered the Order of the Sisters of Our Lady of Loreto in Ireland. She trained in Dublin, Ireland for a few months. In 1929 she was sent to teach at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, India. From 1929 to 1948 she taught at St. Mary's School in Calcutta. The suffering of the people who lived outside the convent made her very sad. So, in 1946 she left the school to take care of the poor people of Calcutta. She started an open air school for homeless children. On October 7, 1950 she founded "The Missionaries of Charity." Their job was to love and care for the people that nobody cared about. Today there are one thousand sisters to help care for the poor.

In 1979 Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1985 she won the Medal of Freedom, (the highest honor in the United States.)

Mother Teresa died September 5, 1997 at 87. She was given a huge funeral where millions attended. She was very important because even though she wasn't rich she cared about the poor. She helped which is why she is one of the most famous woman in history.
