Mary Emily Sinclair

1878 - 1955

Mary E. Sinclair was a great woman mathematician. Through her teaching she shared a love of mathematics a opened a path to research for her students. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. She got a degree in 1900 from Oberlin Collage. Then studied at the University of Chicago. While studying there she got her mater's degree in math in 1903. From 1904-1907 she was an instructor at the University of Nebraska. In 1908 she was the first woman to get a Ph.D. in math from the University of Chicago. She went back to Oberlin Collage. Was made professor because of her Ph.D. and then full professor in 1925. She taught at Oberlin for 37 years. She retired in 1944. She never married but she adopted a girl then one year later she adopted a boy. After retirement in 1944 she taught part time at Berea College in Kentucky. In 1953 she moved to Maine and died two years later in 1955.
