Betsy Ross made the first American flag. She was born in 1752 in Philadelphia. In 1773 she married John Ross. They owned an upholstery store. When John died in 1776, Betsy ran the shop by herself.
In 1870, her grandson told a story about how she made the first American flag for George Washington. George Washington gave her a sketch of the first flag. She copied the sketch but she changed the six point star to a five point star.
No one knows for sure if she sewed the first flag but her house is a museum that many people visit each year.
