Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt lived from 1884 to 1962. She was born in New York City. She spent her life helping poor and needy people. She was one of the greatest women of the twentieth century. She was born into a rich but troubled family. She was a very shy child.

On March 17,1905 she married her distant cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was paralyzed by polio in 1921, and Eleanor became his legs and ears.

In 1932, Franklin became president. Eleanor was a very active First Lady who tried to help women, blacks, Jewish people, refugees, farmers and factory workers.

She was loved and admired by many people who felt that she gave America hope. In 1946, she became a delegate to the United Nations. In 1961 President Kennedy appointed her as chairman of the President's Commission on the Status of Women. Mrs. Roosevelt died on November 7, 1962 in her apartment in New York City.
