Emily Warren Roebling was famous for helping to design and build the Brooklyn Bridge in
New York City. Emily was married to Colonel Washington Augustus Roebling. He started to
build the Brooklyn Bridge then he got sick Emily took over when she was half way finished
he got better. Construction started on the base of the bridge in 1871. The base of the
bridge is sunk in bedrock, 44 feet six inches deep. Her husband never got to go across the
Brooklyn Bridge he died before he could. Emily died shortly after him. Emily won many
awards. Before they died they had a son, his name was John Roebling. Emily helped a lot of
people. While many people ignored her contributions, her name is listed as one of the
builders of the Bridge on the dedication plaque.
