Pocahontas

Pocahontas was born in 1595 in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. She died 1617 at the age of 22. Pocahontas means "the little playful one." Powhatan was Pocahontas father. She had one brother.

John Smith was a special friend to Pocahontas. John taught her the settler's language, and she taught Smith the Indian language.

Powhatan and his tribes caught John Smith and wanted to kill him. Pocahontas told her father if you kill him you'd have to kill me. Powhatan set Smith free.

For some time there was peace between the Indians and the settlers.

The settlers kidnapped Pocahontas and took her to live with them. They changed her name.

Pocahontas married John Rolfe, they had one son. They went on a long and dangerous trip to England. She hoped the trip would help her people. She also thought it might help the settlers in America. Pocahontas was right. She helped people understand each other.

Pocahontas was sick for most of her visit to England. The trip was a big success. Everyone called her by her new name, Lady Rebecca Rolfe.

Pocahontas was a very brave woman, who helped a lot of people.
