Kathryn P. Hire

Kathryn P. Hire is a Commander in the US Naval Reserves. She also is an Astronaut. She was born on August 26, 1959 in Mobile, Alabama. She likes sailing, skiing and fishing.

Kathryn Hire graduated from Murphy High School in Alabama in 1977. She graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland with a degree in engineering.

In 1989 she joined the Naval Air Reserve. In 1993, she was the first woman in the United States assigned to a combat aircrew. She first worked at Kennedy Space Center in May 1989. She was selected by NASA in December 1994 to be an astronaut. She flew on the STS-90 in April of 1998. There she worked on experiments about micro-gravity's effect on the nervous system and the brain.
