Gertrude Caroline Ederle
Gertrude Caroline Ederle was a
swimmer. She was the first woman to swim across the English Channel both ways.
She was born in New York City in 1906. She saw the English Channel for the first
time in 1926. She was 19 years old. She set 29 United States and World Records
for swimming. In the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, France she won a gold medal.
She later became a professional swimmer and swimming teacher.
