Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, India. She went to Tagore School and Punjab Engineer College. She graduated from the University of Colorado with a doctorate in aerospace engineering. She is an Astronaut. She enjoys flying, hiking, backpacking, and reading.

Chawla was selected by NASA in December 1994 to become a candidate of the 15th Group of Astronauts. She served as a mission specialist on STS-87 (November 19 to December 5, 1997). She traveled in orbits for 376 hours and 34 minutes.

Dr. Chawla died on February 1, 2003 in an explosion of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia as it was returning to Earth after a sixteen day mission in space.
