Westward Ho!

Fifth grade students in Mrs. Huber’s class at Pocantico Hills School in Sleepy Hollow, New York have studied the history of the United States during the early 1800’s. We have learned how the U.S. grew and expanded beginning in the early 1800’s when Thomas Jefferson was elected president. We studied the Lewis and Clark expedition and their exploration of the Louisiana Territory. We made a timeline of important events from 1800-1860. We also researched presidents during that time period.

Our maps show the Louisiana Territory, Battle Sites of the War of 1812, and routes taken by Native Americans from the Southeast to Oklahoma because of the Indian Removal Act of Andrew Jackson’s presidency. We looked into the War of 1812 in depth and learned how the Star Spangled Banner became our national anthem. There are some activities to do and links to other sites. We had a lot of fun putting this web site together with our computer teacher, Mrs. Hongell.
