Glossary of important words
colonel - an army officer, ranked below a general but above a major
constitution - the laws and principles used to run a country or organization
delegates - a person elected or appointed to speak for others
general - an army officer of the highest rank
inherit - to get property or money from someone who has died
legislature - a body of persons elected to make laws for a larger group
militia - an army of ordinary citizens (not professional soldiers) trained to fight
oath - a statement or promise to fulfill a pledge
plantation - a large estate or farm on which crops are raised
pneumonia - an disease in which the lungs become inflamed
resign - to give up a job
revolution - the overthrow of one government and replace with another
silhouette - a drawing showing the outline of a person or object, filled in with a solid color
surrender - to give up or abandon
surveyor - a person who works to measure land to find out its boundaries, area, or elevations
treaty - a formal agreement between two or more countries
unanimous - in or showing total agreement
