Oregon Many people say that there is a large rain forest between Washington and Oregon. That's just one out of many interesting facts that I am going to tell you about my beautiful state, Oregon. There are many more interesting facts about Oregon. If you are looking for fun you should go to the High Desert Museums, or the Sea Lion Caves. That is not all you can do there. You can also wind-ski, snow-ski, and, like most all other states, you can go swimming, hunting and fishing. After a long day of fun you can relax at a nice temperature ocean climate. Talking about the ocean, you will probably never guess this interesting fact. Keiko, the whale from the movie Free Will, lives right in Oregons ocean. The location is right next to the Pacific Ocean. The location of the state is the Pacific Northwest. There are lots of ports, too, like New Port, and Port Oxford. There is even a port land, but it is not really near water. It is almost like a capital. Oregon is really big, it is about 97,093 square miles and ranks 10th the United States. It even has 2,687,000 people. There is something interesting about Oregon's bird, too. It has the same bird as Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota. It's the called the Western Meadowlark. The state's rock is very unusual. It is called the Thunder Egg. The tree is the Douglas Fur tree. The state's colors are navy blue and gold. The state's animal is the beaver. The state is nicknamed the Beaver State, but that is not the only nickname. It has others like the Pacific Wonderland and the End of the Trail. The state's flower is the Oregon grape. Oregon's good for planting for a number of different reasons. One reason is that Oregon is very rich in soil, and that they have lots of farmland. Oregon grows a lot of scrumcious foods, like peas, beats and potatoes. They also grow sugar and many more vegetables, and many more cash crops too. They grow hay for the cattle and they grow forage crops. They raise cattle and sheep. Oregon has lots of landforms too, like forests, mountains, state parks and waterfalls but thats not all the landforms they have beaches and shores, ocean, 300 miles of coastline and costal ranges. If you thought landfroms was a lot, Oregons history is even bigger. In 1778, Englishman James Cook sailed up the Oregon's coast. In 1848, the gold rush in California helped Oregon's territory grow. In 1855,white settlers murdered a number of Indians and started a Rouge River War; it lasted about one year, until 1856, that was the same time the state was allowed slavery. Later in 1859, Oregon became the 33rd state in the USA. In 1993, Oregon held is first mail election. Also in 1993, the Oregon Trail celebrated its 150th birthday. In 1937, the Bonneville State Dam began. That is what provides Oregon with hydroelectric power. Some of the customs Oregon has are Shakes Perain Festival in Ashland, the sled dog race in Bend and Union creek (January through February). An all Indian rodeo in Tygh Valley (mid May) Rohododen dron festival in Florence (mid May) and, Fleet Flowers Memorial Service in Dope Bay (late may). Oregon is the leading lumber state in the USA. So it produces lots of wood products. Some of them are plywood, wood pulp, and finished goods like mobile homes, wood cabinets and corrugated boxes. Other products manufactured are electronic and electoral equipment, semiconductors, computers and computer related products.
