Do you know where there are two Halls of Fame? If you guessed Ohio you are right! It has the football Hall of Fame and Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. You can also visit Thomas Edison's birthplace in Milan and lots of other fun and interesting places. You may think this is strange, but my grandma told me that every baby boy is given a football when they are born in Ohio. If you want to know more about Ohio read on.

Ohio is located in the northeast. Ohio's climate is made up of a mild to cold winter and warm to hot summer. The population of Ohio is 11,150,566 and Ohio is 41,222 square miles. Ohio is the 34th biggest state.

The capital of Ohio is Columbus. The other major cities are Cleveland, Cincinnati, Canton, Toledo, Dayton, and Akron.

Ohio has many land forms like the Indian mounds and Wayne National Forest. Ohio is divided into many parts. They are Appalachian plateaus, Interior Low plateaus, and central lowland. The Great Lakes Plain surrounds Lake Erie.

There is a huge river in Ohio. It is called the Ohio River. It is in the Southern part of Ohio.70% of Ohio's river drain into the Ohio River!

The nickname of Ohio is the Buckeye State. The state bird is a Cardinal, and the state flower is the Scarlet Carnation. Ohio has a wonderful motto "With God all things are possible." Ohio means, "Great River" in Iroquois. Seven presidents were born in Ohio. John Glenn and Neil Armstrong were also born there. The state song is called, "Beautiful Ohio". The official state drink is tomato juice.

My Grandma, Evelyn Johnstone Kappmeyer, and her family come from Canton, Ohio. My great, great grandpa sold horses to president McKinley. The first people of Ohio were the Adena Indians. They were mound builders. La Salle was the first explorer in Ohio. A lot of white settlers came to Ohio. The Indians got mad so they killed lots of settlers.

The French and Indian War was fought in 1754. The English won the war. In 1787 Ohio became part of the Northwest Territory. Also, in 1784 the battle of Fallen Timber was fought, and Chief Little Turtle was defeated. This was the end of the Indian Wars. Ohio became the seventeenth state on March 1, 1803. Chillicothe was the first capital of Ohio until 1812. Then Columbus became capital.

John D. Rockefeler started the biggest oil company in the world in Cleveland, Ohio! It was called the Standard Oil Company.

In Ohio, people celebrate lots of festivals. Some are the Twins Festival, Strawberry, and the Popcorn Festival. Chocolate chili is famous in Cincinnati. Ohio also makes a lot of maple syrup, and people like to eat a lot of corn.

The Natural resources above ground in Ohio are timber, water and farmland (soil). The natural resources below ground are cool, natural gas, limestone, salt, and petroleum.

Ohio has lots of farmland to grow crops and raise animals. Some of the animals raised in Ohio are pigs, cattle, sheep, turkeys, and chickens. The major crops grown are corn, wheat, soybeans, tomatoes and cantaloupes. There are lots of dairy farms in Ohio.

The "Buckeye state" has many different industries. The most important industries are cars, trucks, tires and motorcycles. Other factories make iron and steel, jets engines and soap.

I have visited Ohio, and I think it is beautiful! Lake Erie is a fun place to go boating and swimming. Can you figure out this riddle? What is the only state that is round at both ends and high in the middle?
