North Carolina

North Carolina is an awesome state and it was one of the original 13 colonies. The location is in the southeastern region of the United State. It is surrounded by Virginia to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. To the south, is South Carolina and Georgia. Tennessee is on the west.

There are a lot of interesting facts about North Carolina. The size of North Carolina is 52,669 square miles. It is 190 miles north to south and 500 miles west to east. It is the 28th largest state. The population in North Carolina is 7,069,836 people. The state capital is Raleigh. Other important cities are Greensboro, Winston Salem, and the largest city is Charlotte .

North Carolina has many important state symbols. The pine tree is the state tree. The gray squirrel is the state animal. North Carolina's flower is the flowering dogwood and the color is pink and white. The state bird is the cardinal. North Carolina's insect is the honeybee and the state reptile is the turtle. The motto of North Carolina is ''To be rather than to seem.'' It was the 12th state to become part of the U.S.A on November 21, 1983.

In North Carolina there are a lot of amazing Rivers and landform. Some rivers are the Haw River and Cape Fear River. Mount Mitchell is one of the highest points in North Carolina. It is 6,684 feet above sea level. The Blue Ridge Mountain and the Great Smoky Mountains are beautiful and famous. Many of the rivers flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Along the coast are many islands such as Hatters Island and Ocracoke Island. These island help protect the coast during hurricane season.

North Carolina has an interesting history. North Carolina voted for independence in 1776. In 1861 North Carolina seceded from the U.S. during the Civil War. In 1903, the Wright Brothers flew the 1st airplane and it was called the Kitty Hawk. In 1903 North Carolina was the 1st state to produce cotton textiles , tobacco product and wooden furniture. In 1984 there was a very bad tornadoe. 1,000 people were hurt and 61 died during that time.

North Carolina offers many recreational places to visit. People there like to go winter skiing. They go fishing, play golf and hunt too. They also like to go to places like Tryon Palace Garden, New Bern, Greenfeilf Garden, the Statue of James Buchana Duke, White Water Fall, and the Blue Bridge Mountain Parkway. They're all beautiful places to go and fun things to do.

In historical figures about North Carolina there are some pretty amazing people. Billy Graham was a famous preacher. Dolly Madison was first lady and the first lady to serve ice cream at the White House. They even named an ice cream after her. James K. Polk was President. Orville and Wilbur Wright were the inventors of the airplane and they flew their first airplane on 1903.

Manufactured items are very important in North Carolina. There is a lot of manufacturing going on in North Carolina. Baskets and pottery are important and fun to do there. They also make yarn and threads. They sell textiles, a product to use in science is chemicals. They also sell machinery and computers and make furniture. They deliver packed foods all over the country.

Natural Resources in North Carolina are beautiful and important. Clay is used for pottery. Wildflowers are beautiful and they grow around forests. Yellow buckeyes usually grow in people's gardens and is a popular flower. Those are above the ground resources. Below ground resources are mica. It is a mineral that is mined. They also mine gold and silver for jewelry. Slate is used for building, as is granite. Many people dig and find small fossils that they keep as souvenirs.

What North Carolina grows and raises are turkeys and chickens. They sell them to companies that package them for the supermarkets. Berries, grapes and apples are important fruits. They grow cotton in fields and make clothes from it and then sell them. They also grow cucumbers and sweet potatoes. They grow wheat and oat for cereals.

North Carolina is an interesting and exciting state. I learned a lot about it and it is absolutely amazing and fun to learn and write about. Maybe I will visit it or even live there.
