Louisiana

Louisiana is an interesting and awesome state. It is located in the south central region along the Gulf coast of the United States. Bordering Louisiana on the east is Mississippi. Arkansas is north of Louisiana and west of Louisiana is Texas. The Gulf of Mexico makes up its southern border.

There are lots of interesting facts about Louisiana. The climate of Louisiana is subtropical meaning warm, they also have mild winters. The total area is 51,843 square miles and it is ranked 31st in size. There are many people who live there. The population is 4,315,085 giving it a ranking of 21st. Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana, but one of its’ most important cities is New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Other cities are Shreveport and Monroe.

Louisiana has many interesting state symbols. The state flower is the magnolia; it is a very pretty flower. Louisiana's state tree is the bald cypress. "Union, Justice, and Confidence" is Louisiana's motto. Louisiana's state song is "Give Me Louisiana." The Brown Pelican is the state bird and Louisiana's state insect is the honeybee. The Pelican State is Louisiana's state nickname.

Louisiana doesn't have many mountains or hills. The land there is very flat. There are some upland hills in Florida parishes. The lowest point in Louisiana is an amazing eight feet below sea level near New Orleans. The average elevation is one- hundred feet. The mouth of the Mississippi River is in Louisiana. The Mississippi River is changing every year. It is changing right now.

The history of Louisiana is very fascinating. The last battle of the War of 1812 was a very important part of Louisiana's state history. Some famous people were born here too, such as Louis Armstrong, and Bill Russell. In 1872 the United States bought a piece of land called The Louisiana Purchase. It was 872,987 square miles of land, which is now 15 different states. Louisiana became a state in 1800; Napoleon sold this to the United States. Pinkney Pinchback becomes the first black African American governor.

Louisiana has very beautiful recreational areas. One of the most popular is New Orleans. The Louisiana Bayou is a very interesting place to visit also. You can see the trees and animals that live in the bald cypress trees. There are some cities that are pretty popular. They are Shreveport in the south and Monroe, and Lake Charles. Baton Rouge is popular too. If you’re lucky and you visit Shreveport in October you can catch the State Fair.

Louisiana manufactures chemical products, food, and transportation equipment. They also manufacture electronic equipment, petroleum products, lumber, and wood for building and paper including wallpaper, newspaper, and writing paper.

Louisiana grows and raises many things. They raise cattle, hogs, and pigs for of meat and slaughterhouses to make them into food to eat. They grow soybeans, sugarcane, rice, corn, and cotton. The cotton is used to make clothes. They also grow sweet potatoes, pecans, that are a type of nut, and sorghum which is grain.

Louisiana has many natural resources. Some are below ground, Salt is mined and it adds taste to food. Sand is for making cement and is also an important resource. Not many minerals are found above the ground. Some of the natural resources above ground are; the bald cypress trees, even though Louisiana doesn't have many acres of forestland. The actual number of acres of forestland is 13,864,000.

I learned many things from the books I read about Louisiana during my study. At first I thought that Louisiana was a boring state, but when I started reading and learning about Louisiana it became much more interesting. I also found out that the French Quarter and St. Johns Cathedral were there! I found out about many interesting facts about Louisiana.
