Indiana Indiana is a very interesting state. Michigan and Lake Michigan border Indiana in the north. It is also bordered by Illinois on the west, Ohio on the east, and Kentucky on the south. The city South Bend is named South Bend because it lies where the St. Joseph River bends southward. The other city Gary was and still is one of the worlds biggest steel making cities. Indiana is a small state. It is a very small state. It has sand dunes, lakes, and rolling hills. Indianas bird is called the Cardinal. It is a beautiful red bird with such a pretty tone. Indianas motto is "Crossroads of America." The Nickname of Indiana is the Hoosier State. Its song is "On the Banks of the Wabash." Indianas tree is the tulip tree. The land area is 35,936 square miles. Its highest point is Hoosier Hill in Wayne County. Indiana's largest city is it capital, Indianapolis. In 1679, Robert La Salle, the first known white explorer reached Indiana. In 1775, the Revolutionary War began. In 1813, the territorial capital moved to Corydon. In 1816, Indiana became a state. In 1831, the Underground Railroad begins its lifesaving work. Some runaway slaves traveled through Indiana on their way to fredon in Canada. In 1861, the Civil War began. In 1863, Moorage's Raiders took part in the battle of Corydon. In 1864, you had to watch where you're going because streetcars began operation. In 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 automoblie race took off. In 1916, it was the first state primary. In 1978, Brrr Terrible blizzard buried the state. In 1982, a flood hits Fort Wayne. Indiana manufactures electrical machinery, steel products, farm machinery, food products, auto parts, airplane engines, recreational vehicles and chemicals. Indiana grows vegetables and fruits and raises beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep and chickens. Indiana's natural resources aboveground are: corn, soybeans, tomatoes, popcorn, wheat, hay, oats, onions, cabbage, cucumber, peaches, apples, strawberries, tobacco and dairy cows. Indiana's below ground resources are coal, limestone, clay, sand, gravel, petroleum, kaolin and shale. Indiana is a beautiful state, and very exciting. It's a great tourist place.
