Georgia Georgia is a dynamic state. It is located in the southwestern part of the United States. It is east of Alabama, west of South Carolina, south of the Appalachian Mountain, and north of Florida. Its southeastern corner touches the Atlantic Ocean. Georgia is a popular place to live and vacation because of its warm weather and low humidity. The average rainfall is only 50 inches per year. Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River. It is 58,977 square miles. Its population is 7,055,336. Georgia is ranked 21st in size and 11th in population. Georgias capital is Atlanta. It is also called "The Peach State," and has many important cities. Two cites in Georgia are Athens and Macon. Athens is the home of Georgia University. Macon is sometimes called the Heart of Georgia because it is near Georgia center. One of the best known mountains is called Lookout Mountain. This mountain extends though the states of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. The smallest and prettiest landforms of Georgia are the mountains. The highest peck in Georgia is Mount Enotah. It is 4,784 feet high. Georgia has different landforms. Some are the Coastal Plains, Piedmont, Plateau, Blue Ridge, Provoke, and the Appalachian Plateau. The Coastal Plains cover nearly 60 percent of the state. This area is filled with soil, rocks, sand, gravel and stone. Georgia has three nicknames. They are "The Peach State," "The Goober State," and "The Empire State of the south." In the Okefenokee Swamp, there are more than 90 different kinds of birds. Altogether there are 350 different kinds of birds in Georgia. The state bird of Georgia is the Brown Thrasher. Georgia has many beautiful wild flowers. Some of them are the rose, hibiscus, and the camellia. Georgias state flower is the Cherokee rose. Today, 60 percent of Georgias land is made up of trees. One of the trees that grow there is the Live Oak, which is known as the state tree. The Georgian peoples favorite song is "Georgia on My Mind." The Spanish were the first Europeans to settle in Georgia. When they arrived in Georgia, there were two Indian tribes, named the Cherokee and the Creek, that were already there. Georgia got its new statehood on January 2, 1788. It was the first state to join the union. James Althorn came to Georgia from England and named it for the king. He signed a treaty with the Indian Chief Tomochichi. In the city of Savannah there is a statue of Oglethope. Oglethope was the man who settled Georgia. He also came from England. Some land places to visit are the Scenic Mountains, state parks, Stone Mountain, and Blue Ridge Mountains. Some water places to visit are the different lakes, rivers, and the beaches. People will go to these places on hot days. Some things to do are going to Six Flag, Library, Museum, Jackal Island, Seashores, and historic riverfront. Manufacturing brings a lot of money to Georgia. Georgia is a leading state in cloth making. It is also a leader in producing wood products. Its products go by train, plane and truck to many different cities in our country. Georgia has many farms. It is known as the leading state in growing peanuts and peaches. Farmers also grow sweet potatoes and other vegetables in Georgia. Georgia is also the leading state in tobacco growing. Farmers still grow cotton like they did many years ago. Georgia is very lucky to have many natural resources. Two important minerals found in Georgia are marble and granite. These are used to make beautiful buildings. Another important mineral is clay. The clay is used to make beautiful china. Below the ground they can get stone and coal. Above the ground they can also get other wonderful resources. Some of them are fertile soil, plant life and animal life. Everyone should visit Georgia if they can. Then they can see the wonderful farms, special places, natural resources, and lovely weather.
