Delaware

Delaware is a great place to visit. Delaware was one of the 13 original states. You could go to the state capital that is called Dover. You can even visit other cities. Some important cities to visit are Wilmington and Georgetown. It is located along the Atlantic Coastal Plain.

Delaware has a moderate climate. The average temperature of Delaware is 54°F and the average rainfall is about 20 inches a year. Can you believe it? Delaware is usually hot and humid during the summers and has mild winters. The average temperature changes during the season. In July, the temperature is in the 80's. In January, the average is about 31°F.

Delaware is not very big, it is only 2,489 square miles. It only ranks 49 out of all 50 of the United States. The population is not that big either. It is only 724,842, and it ranks 46th. 80.3% of the people are white and 16.9% of the people are black.

Delaware is interesting because it is mostly a plateau. The land is flat and rolling. There are many plateaus in Delaware. There are also two different regions. One of them is called Piedmont Plateau. It is in the north and the Coastal Plains are along the water. There are also the Appalachian Mountains, foothills and waterfalls. There are also canals in Delaware. Two canals are the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

The symbols of Delaware are very important. Some of them are the state animal that is the Blue Hen chicken, the state tree is the American Holly tree, the state flower is the Peach Blossom flower and the state animal is the ladybug. The state motto is "Liberty and Independence." The state song is "Our Delaware."

The history of Delaware is very exciting also. The Dutch were the first people to settle in Delaware. The explorer, Henry Hudson, founded the Delaware River in 1609. They settled near Lewis in 1631. That was long ago. The Indians destroyed some of the settlers.

The Dutch settled in a new area in 1655 near New Castle. In 1664, Delaware lost all of New Netherlands to the British. In 1668, Delaware became a part of Pennsylvania. In 1704, Delaware was granted its own assembly. In 1778, they adopted a constitution as a state.

Delaware manufacturers many things. Some things are nylon apparel, luggage, automobiles and processed meat. Other manufactured goods in Delaware are railroads and aircraft equipment. Also, the south is still an agricultural area. Farmers produce products for the markets. Delaware grows soybeans, potatoes, sweet corn, cucumbers, mushrooms, barley and green peas. They raise boilers, hogs and cattle. There are a lot of things to do in Delaware. Some things are swimming, boating and other water sports. There is also camping, hiking and picnicking.

There are also tourists attractions that are very interesting. For example, there are the Francis Dumont Museum, The John Dickinson Pen, Man of Revelation and the FT Christina Monument. Fort Christina is in Wilmington. It is where Swedish pioneers landed in 1638. This was the first permanent settlement in Delaware. The John Dickinson Plantation was built in 1740. It was the home of John Dickinson. He was a famous American patriot. Now it is a historical area.

A natural resource is something made by nature. They are found above ground and below ground. Natural resources found below ground in Delaware are magnesium, sand and gravel and blue granite. Above ground there is timber as a natural resource.
