Connecticut Connecticut is a small state but it has a lot of history! It is located in the northeastern area of the United States. Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island and, the Atlantic Ocean all border it. Massachusetts is on the northern side of it, New York is on the west side of it, Rhode Island is on the east side of it and, the Atlantic Ocean is south of it. Connecticut's climate is moderate. In the winter the average temperature is slightly below freezing. In the summer it's humid and hot. There are only about 10 days a year, which the temperature is above 90° F and only about 3 days a year when it's 0 ° F or below. Connecticut has a variety of climate. Connecticut gets a fair amount of rain each season. It has storms in summer and winter. In the late summer hurricanes go up the Gulf stream and hit the coastal areas. It gets 44-48 inches of rain. Connecticut is the 3rdsmallest state in area. The area of Connecticut is 4,845 square miles. Its population is 3,271,800 people. In population its rank is 27. The capital of Connecticut is Hartford. Some major cities in Connecticut are Bridgeport, New Haven, Waterbury and Stamford. Bridgeport is where the first beaver Hat Company was built. New Haven is where Yale University is. Waterbury is where the first hook-and-eye fasteners were made and Stamford is noted for its museum and nature center. Connecticut has western upland and narrow central lowland. It has high elevations and hilly eastern upland that are drained by rivers. Landforms in Connecticut are The Connecticut River, The Twin Lakes, and the Berkshires. Other mountains in Connecticut are the Bear Mountains, Canaan Mountains and the Haystack Mountains. Each state has its own symbols. Connecticut has many lovely kinds of trees that lots of pretty kinds of birds like to nest in. But its official tree is the White Oak and official bird is the American Robin. It has many kinds of flowers that many kinds of insects like but its official flower is the Mountain Laurel and the official insect is the Praying Mantis. Connecticut has a peculiar song you may be familiar with, Yankee Doodle! The state animal is the Sperm Whale. Connecticut has many different nicknames and three of them are The Nutmeg State, The Provision State, and The Constitution State. But its official nickname is the Constitution State. Eight counties make up Connecticut. They are Litchfield, Hartford, Tolland, Windham, Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London. Connecticut became a state on January 9th 1788. Its the 5th of the 13 colonies. The Algonquin Indians lived there before any body. Adrien Block an explorer from Holland discovered it. In the 1630's lots and lots of people came to Connecticut from Massachusetts. They built towns in Hartford, Wethersfield, and Windsor. They were called the Three River Towns. There are many places in Connecticut people like to visit. Such as, the Peabody Museum, Yale University's Art Gallery, and the Mark Twain House. In New Haven people like to go to the Mystic Seaport, Mystic Marine Life Aqarium, and the Barnum Museum. In Bridgeport some popular places are The Gillete Castle, Nautilus Memorial, and Groton, where you can see the first nuclear-powered submarine. Also, the Foxwards Casino and the Memorial Library at Yale University. Connecticut manufactures many important things such as, aircraft engines and parts, submarines, helicopters, instruments, and machinery, computer equipment, electrical equipment, electronics, medical instruments and pharmaceuticals. Connecticut grows many things like, nursery stock, Christmas trees, tobacco, and vegetables such as, mushrooms, sweet corn and fruit such as apples. Connecticut raises cattle, horses, hogs/pigs, and sheep. Connecticut has many natural resources such as, timber, lumber, sand, gravel, clay, stone, and soils. Also Minerals and iron. Connecticut has a lot of Interesting people like, Thomas Hooker also known as "the Father of Connecticut." He was a Puritan minister whose sermon led to the First Written Constitution. P.T. Barnum was born in 1810. He started to put on shows in 1836. Then, in 1880, he and J.A. Bailey began Barnum and Baileys Circus " The Greatest show on Earth!" Nathan Hale was a spy who was hung by the British in 1776. He lived in Coventry and died when he was 21. A famous line he said was, " I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country." Mark Twain was a pen name for Samuel L. Clemens. He was a famous artist and humorist. One of the books he wrote was Tom Sawyer. He wrote many other famous books when living in Hartford. Connecticut is one of the most beautiful, enchanting places in the world. The Litchfield Hills bring peace and perspective. Connecticut is a very interesting state!
