South Dakota My report is on South Dakota. Its location is north central part of the country. Its climate is warm, cold, sunny, and has 4 seasons. Its population is 729,034 and its size is 77,047 square miles. Its capital and cities are Pierre as capital and cities are Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Watertown, Brookings, Mitchell, and Huron. The landforms in South Dakota are Lakes, little grasslands, mountains, cliffs, and plateaus. The name of the river that runs through South Dakota is the Mississippi River. In South Dakota there are lots of dams. The names of the dams are Big Bend Dam, Oahe Dam just north of Pierre, and Fort Randall Dam. My state has a lot of symbols. My state has a lot of symbols. My state flag is all blue and has a sun and people on it. My state bird is very unusual, it is the Chinese ring-necked pheasant. It has a long tail and a ring around its neck. The South Dakota State flower is kind of hard to spell; it is the pasque flower. It is very pretty and it grows all over South Dakota. My state tree is the Black Hills Spruce. South Dakota's gem is the Rose Quartz it is very pretty. My state animal is the tricky sneaky coyote. My state motto is " Under God People Rule". If you are looking for something to do in my state, there are a lot of interesting places to visit. Harny Peak is the tallest point in South Dakota. It towers over everything at 7,242 feet. You could tell all your friends you saw the Great Lakes. The animals in the Great Plains Zoo seem to interest everybody. You could see all the animals that live in South Dakota. There is a lot of history is my state. A long time ago Mandan, Hidatis, Arikara and Sioux tribes lived here. 1742 the French verendrye brothers explored the region. The U.S. acquired the area in 1803. Lewis and Clark passed through this area in 1804 than again in 1806. In 1874 a man discovered gold, lots and lots of gold. My state manufactures a lot of equipment. South Dakota makes and builds mowers and combines. It also manufactures processed food as in beans, corn, etc. Fabricated metal and high-tech electronics are made in South Dakota and are very poplar here. Bentonite, meatpacking, gasoline, cement, credit cards and insurance are manufactured in South Dakota. South Dakota has a lot of electric power from the dams. South Dakota grows a lot of different kinds of vegetables. My state grows rye, corn, oats, flax and barley. After all the things are picked they are brought to the market to be sold. South Dakota also grows melons. The melons are fresh everyday and South Dakota grows cantaloupe. Its livestock contains cattle ranching and sheep ranching. South Dakota also uses sheep for wool. South Dakotas Natural Resources are above ground and below ground. Im going to talk about the ones below ground. South Dakota has emeralds, rubies and sapphires they are very pretty gems that are used on jewelry. Emeralds are green, rubies are red and sapphires are blue. Do you have any of these? South Dakota has a lot of building items such as limestone, sand, gravel and coal. South Dakota also has some valuable above ground resources such as cedar, spruce, balsam, papal, birch and willow. This wood is manufactured into furniture, which is sold throughout out the whole country. South Dakota is very exciting. There are a lot of things to do and you will never get bored, with its gigantic mountains and rivers. When I grow up South Dakota would be on my list to find a place to live. |
