People came to Maine 10000 years ago. 4000 years ago ancient people called the Red Paint People live there. They hunted moose, tapped maple trees for sap and made baskets and pottery. The Red Paint People got their name because inside their grave their was a brilliant red ochre powder. In 1820 Maine got its statehood. Maine then became the twenty-third state in the Union. Portland became the capital and William King was the first governor. Maine doesn't only have an interesting back round it has some very cool sites. You should try visiting Black House in Ellsworth. It was made in 1820. It is furnished with beautiful antiques. There is also Fort Western, Burnham Tavern and Lady Pepperel House. Fort Western is in Augusta and was built in the beginning of 1774. Burnham Tavern is in Machias. It was built in 1750. Lady Pepperel House is in Kittery and was built in 1750. It has beautiful colonial furnishings. Another interesting place is Montipeller in Thomaston. It was a reproduction of the mansion Gen. Scarborough Downs is in Scarborough of course and is between Portland and Old Orchard Beach. It is the only racetrack in Maine. Maine is also very fun for having camp outs and fishing. There are also very nice houses by the sea and you may walk down and take a swim any time you like but remember the water is cold! Maine has many manufactured products. Some products are furniture for offices and homes; apparel for, of course everything we wear and published materials to read. Leather products, processed foods, lumber; wood products and textiles are very valuable here. Tanning, leather footwear and allied products make up Maines fourth largest industry. Maine raises beef cattle, poultry and hogs for Christmas, Thanksgiving and all those wonderful times and holidays, and farmers have large farms to be able to supply all of these animals for food. We also grow blueberries and other types of fruits. Farmers also raise oats, potatoes and vegetables which are then turned into processed foods such as cereal and caned goods. Maine has many natural resources such as feldspar, sand and gravel, but Maines best-known resource is fish and other marine life. Maine has the finest fishing territory, which contains thirty- eight different kinds of edible fish. Maine has few above ground natural resources such as forest products. Some forest products are lumber and trees. We also have fertile land. Maine has many resources that are underground. We have good soil, , minerals, granite, limestone, peat, and slate.
