A Portrait of Harriet Tubman

I have been learning about Harriet Tubman.  She was black and a slave that helped other people get to freedom. She had rough hands from working in the fields.   She had a scar on her head because in a store one day a man was chasing another slave and Harriet got in the way of the door.  He threw a heavy iron weight at the slave but she got hit instead.  I am now going to tell you about her personality traits.  She was helpful because she went back and helped other people on the Underground Railroad.  Harriet was very smart, like one time she was outside a train station and her owner was looking for her.  Quickly she picked up a book and pretended to read it.  That is one way she is smart but there is more than that.   Harriet was very caring because she helped other people. Harriet always kept her word, like when she said she would come back for her mom and dad-she did.  Harriet was a caring person like I said before.  She was so caring that when the war ended she had helped about 70 people.  Harriet was a very courageous woman because she got to freedom and helped lots of others get to freedom too.

I am going to tell you how Harriet looks.  Harriet has a scar on her head.  A man named Mr. Brodess took Harriet to a new master.  She was hired out to work for other families.  Sometimes they were very cruel to her.  They told her to wash the floor and told her to take care of the babies.  And it was very hard for a little girl.  Harriet was born a slave.  But she spent her whole life fighting for freedom.

There was no place to hide so Harriet let them all go in the water so the dogs could not smell them. Harriet was smart. When the marshalls were looking for her, they thought they found her. So quickly, she took a book and she pretended to read. The marshalls said, "Harriet cannot read or write!" So they left. Harriet was helpful when she led about 70 slaves to freedom. I think Harriet was a caring person because she helped so many slaves to get to freedom!

I would like to tell you about Harriet Tubman.  Harriet Tubman looked slender.  She had black hair, dark eyes. and she was black.  Even though Harriet was short she was very strong.  Harriet had lots of scars because she was a slave and if she did something wrong she would get whipped.  Harriet had dreamed about being free.  She was happy if she got to work outside because she was more free outside instead of inside the house.  Harriet was brave because when she was in a store once there was a slave and a master.  The master was chasing after the slave.   Harriet had courage to stand in the door and block the master.  But the master threw a heavy iron weight at the slave but instead it hit Harriet.  Harriet sometimes worked for other people.  She dreamed so much about freedom and she did runaway in 1849.  Harriet decided to help other slaves get to freedom.  Also she helped about 70 slaves.  Harriet had tricks, too.  Once she pretended to be a man so that her people wouldn't catch her.  Harriet would carry a gun so if slaves were too scared she would point at them and say, "Go on or die!"  Harriet also kept her word.  She did that by helping her parents to freedom.  When it was 1861, the time of the Civil War, Harriet was a spy for the northern army.  Harriet died when she was over ninety years old.  That was a little biography of Harriet Tubman.

She saw a man.   Then she said, "There he is," and they saw a wagon he had full of all kinds of food.  They said, "Could we share some food with you?"  The guy said, "Sure."  Then they had some food.  Then they went on.   She went to Canada in her dreams.  She was a good person.  She went to Canada a lot of times.  She hid in carriages.  She hid in houses.  She hid in water.  She hid in swamps that were dirty.  She didn't mind.  She just didn't want to get caught.  Sometimes she went to Philadelphia and worked with some black and white people.  She worked a lot with people.  She was clever a lot of times.  She worked for a long, long time.  She went to a lot of states.   She was a person who knew the way to Canada.  She knew the way where the Underground Railroad started.  She knew where she was.  She had helped about 70 people get to Canada. She had been a special person who had never gotten caught.  She went to a station that had a good thing in it. It had a bathtub that had hot water and cold water and a soft bed.  The farmer and his wife had it.  They had helped her make a soft pillow.  So she fell asleep in the station.  Then she left and made it to Canada.

I am going to tell you about how Harriet Looked.   She had black hair and she was short and had dark eyes.  She was strong.   When she was picking up heavy wooden barrels she was stronger than most women and stronger than some men.  She was clever when she let two chickens go and a white man laughed.  She was clever again when she saw a white man and he said, "Is that Moses?" and Harriet picked up a book but she had the book upside down.  The white man didn't notice.  Harriet risked her own life when she got in the way and the metal weight hit her and she had strange dreams.  She tried to help free slaves all her life.  Then she died when she was 93 years old.
