I read a book about Louis Braille. Louis Braille was born in Coupvray, France on January 4, 1809. When Louis was three years old, he got blind because he was playing with his father’s tools and got hit in the eye, which became infected and the infection spread to the other eye. He went to school when he was ten years old and there he wrote the alphabet of dots at age 15. He wrote 2 other kinds of dots one for music and one for numbers. He died when he was only 35 years old from tuberculosis, a disease of the lung.

He made the Braille alphabet for the blind. The Braille alphabet is all in dots. People still use the Braille alphabet today.

I read the biography of George Washington Carver. When George was a little boy George liked flowers. George also liked to go to church. He had a great singing voice. But George was born a slave. Luckily, George was raised by Mr. Carver and Mrs. Carver. George also had a brother named Jim. But George had to leave Mr. and Mrs. Carver because he wanted to go to school and there were no schools there. But George was very lucky because when he needed money or somewere to live other people helped him. So George got to go to college. George also got a letter from Booker T. Wasington that said that he was welcome to teach at his school. At the school George taught the children how to plant things. George had thirteen children in his class. The school was in Macon Country Alabama.

George was born somewhere between 1859 and 1864. He was the son of a slave. He was interested in plants and all living things. When George was 10 he had to go to Neosho for school because the school in Diamond Grove was for white children only. He was good at reading and drawing, but he was bad at math. On September 9, 1890 George was accepted to Simpson College. On April 1, 1896 George got a letter from Booker T. Washington saying that they wanted him to teach science at Tuskegee Institute. George taught thirteen children the first year. He became a famous scientist.

I read a book about Paul Revere. Paul lived in Boston when he was a boy. Paul’s dad was a silversmith and he taught him how to become a good one too. Paul grew big and strong, he was very smart and he liked to make lots of new things. Paul and the other patriots wanted America to be free from England. Paul had a good plan to find out where the soldiers were coming from. He also helped a lot with making things for the war. At the end the Americans won the war and Paul and his sons began to make silver things again.

Betsy was born on January 1, 1752, in the same year the big bell in the state house came over from England. Betsy’s real name was Elizabeth Griscom but they just called her Betsy. Betsy had six older sisters, a baby sister and a little brother. Betsy’s great grandfather helped William Penn found Philadelphia and that is where Betsy lived. Betsy loved sewing and she won first prize for making a bell design at 12 years old. Betsy married John Ross and they opened a shop and there she made a design for the American flag.
