Mrs. O'Neill's Class

Resource Room Program

The Resource Room program at the primary level is designed to provide academic support to students who demonstrate special learning needs. Subjects in which assistance is offered include phonemic awareness, reading, written expression, spelling, handwriting and math. The program is staffed by a Special Education Teacher and a Special Education Teaching Assistant.

Both push-in and pull-out services are provided. Push-in support occurs when the Special Education Teacher or Assistant works in a regular education classroom, co-teaching with the regular education teacher. Assistance is provided to any child who may need help successfully meeting the goals of the lesson. Pull-out services are delivered to small groups in the Resource Room setting. Instruction is individualized to meet the needs of each student. Hands-on activities and multi-sensory teaching techniques are employed in order to involve students in the learning process. These hands-on experiences help the students to achieve a deeper understanding of concepts presented and to retain information more easily.

The Special Education Teacher and Teacher Assistant meet weekly with each regular education teacher in order to communicate about the students and plan effective instruction. Specific assignments are discussed, and plans are made for any modifications or support the students might need.

This collaboration between the regular and Special Education staff and the delivery of services both in and out of the regular classroom combine to make the primary Resource Room program extremely effective. Through skill building and support of classroom assignments, Resource Room students are enabled to meet academic success.
