Foreign Language in the Elementary School 2nd Grade Second graders experience eighteen weeks of French and eighteen weeks of Spanish. They then choose French or Spanish and continue with that language. 3rd - 5th Grades Listening and speaking skills are emphasized through curriculum units and Total Physical Response Storytelling. As students progress through the fourth and fifth grades reading and writing will be introduced. All activities are hands-on and interactive. Middle School Foreign Language 6th Grade French or Spanish Communicative competence is developed using the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will discuss personal identification, clothing, parts of the body, likes and dislikes, and family members. Students will learn to narrate, revise, retell, and create stories through the use of Total Physical Response Storytelling. 7th Grade French or Spanish Communicative competence will continue to be emphasized through Total Physical Response Storytelling. There will be a review of the present tense and the present progressive tense. Reflexive, irregular, and stem-changing verbs will be introduced. Students will discuss their houses, towns, daily schedules, meals, favorite sports, pastimes, nationalities, and French and Spanish speaking countries. This course culminates with a school final exam. 8th Grade French and Spanish Communicative competence continues to grow through the use of Total Physical Response Storytelling. Students will narrate from different points of view and in present, past, and future time frames. Students will learn direct and indirect object pronouns. Students will read short novels to expand their vocabulary and reinforce language structures. This course culminates with the 8th Grade State Proficiency Exam worth one high school credit.
