Lyndon B. Johnson
By Roderick

President Johnson was born on August 27, 1908 in Stonewall, Texas. He married Claudia Alta Taylor and called her Lady Bird Johnson. He had two daughters, Lynda Bird and Luci. He was able to read at age four; he was intelligent but mischievous. Johnson went to a public school in Johnson City. He received a degree at Texas State Teacher's College. He studied law at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Before being President he taught grade school. He went to Washington in 1931 as a secretary to a democratic congressman. He was asked to head the National Youth Administration. Johnson served in the navy. He owned his own radio station. He was a democratic senator from Texas for 6 years.

In 1934 he married Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor. They had two daughters, Lynda Bird, in 1944, and Luci Baines, in 1947.

Johnson was the first President to be sworn in by a woman. JFK had just died and he took over. Lyndon's election campaign theme in 1964 was "All the way with LBJ!" He won with overwhelming numbers. LBJ had a war on poverty. He approved 10 anti-poverty programs while he was President, for example, Job Core for teens and Head Start for preschoolers. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, no segregation in hotels, schools or restaurants was allowed. He passed the Medicare bill and provided health services. He improved aid to schools. We got deeper involved in the Vietnam War.

The public was angry about the war in Vietnam so Johnson did not want to be re-elected. In 1969 he returned to his ranch in Texas and wrote a book. He supervised construction of the Johnson Library in Austin City, Texas. He died on January 22, 1973 and is buried at the LBJ Ranch in Johnson City, Texas.
