William Henry Harrison
William Henry Harrison was born February 9, 1773 in Charles City, Virginia. In his early life, William Henry Harrison's family was very rich and he lived on his family's plantation. When he was a teenager he went to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania until his father died and he ran out of money. Then he got married and had 8 children. He served in the army and fought in the Indian raids. He also fought in the worst battles of them all, Little Big Horn and Tippecanoe which were the most violent. He actually was victorious in all of them. He became famous and got the nickname Tippecanoe and he had managed to stop the Indian raids. He was a war hero and people elected him as President. He was running against van Buren and won 234 electoral votes to 60. He had a very short time in office because he died right after he was inaugurated. He gave the longest inauguration speech in the history, standing in the cold without a coat, scarf or hat. He had just unpacked and had a bad case of pneumonia. He had been unconscious most of his time in office. One month after he took office he died. He was the first to die in office. He was only the ninth president. Poor William Henry Harrison! |
