Franklin D. Roosevelt
I bet you didn't know that Franklin Roosevelt was President for 12 years. On January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York, Sara and James Roosevelt had a boy. His name was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In his early years a private tutor taught him. His family was rich. His 5th cousin was Theodore Roosevelt. At fourteen he attended Groton Boys School in Massachusetts. His family didn't waste money. His father was a quite man. He paid more attention to his mother than anybody else did. FDR married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. She helped him when he got polio and was disabled. They had 5 children. Before becoming President, Franklin D. Roosevelt was a member of the Legislature. He was an Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He was also the Governor of New York from 1921 to 1933. He graduated from Harvard College. He became a lawyer. In the election he was part of the Democratic Party. He promised to help the people out of the Great Depression if he was elected. He had run with John N. Garner for his first term. On his first term he ran against Herbert C. Hoover and won by 7,050,731 popular votes and 413 electoral votes. On his second term he ran with Henry H. Wallace. He ran against Alfred M. London, Governor of Kansas, and won by 4,082,204 popular votes and 515 electoral vote. On his third term he ran with Harry S. Truman. He ran against Wendell L. Willkie and won by 21,810,801 popular votes and 367 electoral votes. On his fourth term he ran against Thomas E. Dewey and won by 3,591,840 popular votes and 332 electoral votes. He helped the people during the Great Depression. He made a law saying that if the stock market goes too low it will have to close. Franklin Roosevelt promised to help everybody during the Great Depression. He vowed to give everybody money. He also promised to stop the fighting and stealing for money. That was the New Deal. Unfortunately it failed because of World War II. After the war the next President used the New Deal. Some have strengthened and expanded the New Deal. The New Deal is still being used. He helped the people during World War II. He signed the Declaration of War against Japan. He believed that every country should have it's own government without the other countries interfering. On February 15,1933 when he was landing in Miami, there was a wild shooting. Zangara shot and killed the Mayor of Chicago and three men. Luckily he missed Roosevelt. Franklin Roosevelt had polio and became crippled. He collected birds. He also collected stamps. Franklin Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945 in Warm Springs, Georgia of a stroke. Franklin Roosevelt was one of the best Presidents in U.S. history.
