Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith at Springfield College in Massachusetts. He wanted an indoor game for his students. It was first played with a peach basket and a scrunched up ball of paper. Today basketball is one of the most popular games in the world.

Basketball games are divided into four periods of ten minutes each. It is played with five men on the court for each team. Players have to dribble the ball when they walk or run. The object of the game is to try to get the ball into the other team's basket. The other team tries to stop them and get the ball into the first team's basket. Every time a team scores a basket they get two points. There is also a line called the three-point arc. If you shoot from beyond the arc you get three points. If the other team fouls someone that player gets to go to the foul line and take free shots at the basket. The team with the most point at the end of the game wins.

To be a basketball player you need know how to shoot, dribble, know the rules, and it helps to be tall. You also need to be able to run for long periods of time. If you get really good you can become a professional basketball player.

One of the greatest basketball players of all time is Michael Jordan. In the Olympics there will be men's basketball and women's basketball. Basketball first became an Olympic sport in 1936.
