Martha Washington
by Brittany

I’m Martha Washington and I am going to tell you about myself. I was born as Martha Dandrige in Virginia on June 21, 1731 and died May 22 1802. I am buried in Mount Vernon. My father was John Dandridge, who is a very rich landowner. I did not go to school. I married Daniel Custis when I was 18. I married George Washington in January 1759.

I was a very proper person, small and slightly plump. I dressed very plain, usually in a plain homespun brown dress and bonnet to stand up for independence. I had white hair and two kids named Patsy and Jacky from my first husband. Both children died before me.

I shared many hard times and traveled to war camps to help the ill and wounded soldiers. I was 44 when I made my first visit to an army camp. I made supplies for soldiers. I watched over large pieces of land and it’s slaves, which were about 300 people.

After George left for English Independence I became a camp follower and traveled over snow and sleet, muddy and narrow roads. A good adventure for me would to be a soldier in a war. I would have to try my hardest to stay alive and healthy so that I could still help the ill and wounded soldiers. I would use my sewing and cooking skills to survive, help the others and adjust to changes in the weather.
