It's Kool to be Kind Day
at Pocantico Hills School

In our School,
We've decided it's kool
To be kind and to have an open mind.
We've packed up our books,
And lost all rude looks,
To make sure this day really cooks.
In our trying we've learned a lot,
Like who's really our friend and who's not,
So to conclude this special day,
We ask you to be kind in every way.

On January 27, 2000 the Pocantico Hills Middle School students were changed by the world - renowned Marc Brown. After only 5 minutes of speaking, he had the audience's full attention. He captivated the audience by telling fairy tales and true life stories. One student's remark, "He was so funny that I almost cried laughing." Another replies, "He may have been funny but he definitely tackled those tough issues, like suicide and the horror of going to school for some people." Everyone who heard him was extremely moved by his speaking and listening to him might have changed his or her view of the world.

After Marc Brown finished, the students were put into groups to discuss their feelings of the speech. The groups were a mix of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and their discussions really covered everything he said. We didn't want everyone to be kind only for one day so we decided to do a few fun activities so that students here wouldn't have to feel that they had to have the right clothes or right friends to be cool.
